Please note, while learning a new language like German, it is best to not translate everything. Understanding the grammar, its rules, and the context of what we want to say and how we say it is very important. However, considering this is a textual medium, I may provide some translations to English for better understanding.
All nouns in German have articles, namely, der, die, and das which denote masculine, feminine, and neutral, respectively. The article for all plural words is die regardless of gender.
Genus | bestimmt artikel | unbestimmt artikel | negation artikel |
Maskulin | der | ein | kein |
Feminin | die | eine | keine |
Neutrum | das | ein | kein |
Plural | die | - | keine |
The bestimmt artikel is identifying a noun in a specific situation, translating to 'the' in English.
The unbestimmt artikel is used to identify a noun in an unspecific situation, translating to 'a', and 'an'.
Note that there is no plural form for unbestimmt artikel, which basically means when we're talking about an noun which is unspecific of more than one quantity, there will be no article for it in the sentence.
Example:
These articles are used in sentences before the nouns and they take different forms in Akkusativ and Dativ which are grammar concepts.
It's always better to learn all nouns along with their article as a whole. There is no rule as to why a particular noun has a certain article. A handful of them are straightforward.
Learning only the bestimmt artikel of nouns will suffice as we can make changes accordingly as and when required.
The first letter of all nouns will always be in uppercase in German regardless of the position of the noun in the sentence.
Below are some examples:
Maskulin | Feminin | Neutrum | Plural |
der Mann | die Frau | das Baby | die Kinder |
der Hund | die Katze | das Buch | die Bücher |
der Stuhl | die Schule | das Kino | die Stühle |
The singular words in masculine, feminine, and neutral also have plural forms. As mentioned above, the article for all plural forms is die.
Thank you for reading :)
